Black dog Syndrome

August 3, 2010

I remember when I first heard of black dog syndrome. I had known some really beautiful black dogs over the years so I was shocked when I heard that black dogs are often the last dogs to be selected at shelters. Whether it is because we as kids growing up are bombarded with cartoons showing brown dogs, or that maybe spotted dogs seem more iconic or maybe people are afraid that black dogs look meaner. I don’t know the reasons behind peoples preferences.

I will tell you that we chose a blue dane for our first dog. I think this was because I had already known a blue dane through family friends. However, when it came time to adopt a sister for our boy Caesar I secretly wanted a fawn girl although I was committed to adopting the BEST dog (temperament wise) that would fit into our family. Luckily for us that turned out to be a beautiful black dane named Chloe. Going forward I truly believe the best approach is to stay open as possible, and the right dog will find you whatever the color or sex of the dog.

If you thinking about adopting. assuming a personality and lifestyle match with the dog, please take a moment to consider a black dog.
