Picking out your new dog. Should you get a boy or a girl? I had gone into it after 40 years of waiting for my first dog thinking that I definitely wanted a boy dog. I guess I just figured boy dogs were cooler or more playful. I remember when we went to the breeders to pick out our first Great Dane pup. There were two litters to choose from, if I remember correctly and a lot of the boys were already taken. When I asked the breeder what the difference was between a boy and girl dog, I was told you don’t want a female, that they are bitches (and I don’t mean the sex designation) I was also surprised to hear that from some other dog owners that I have asked over the years. I was shocked. Well we did end up getting a boy at that time, whom we love more than anything.
When we later decided to adopt our boy Caesar a sibling, we chose to get a girl in hopes that they would get along better than a 2 boy household. I gotta say, bringing a girl dog into our family has been such a great thing. The only differences I see are positive ones. Our boy needs to play constantly (CONSTANTLY), our girl Chloe is more clingy (which I really like) and is ok with just lying down next to me while I work which is a welcome change sometimes. I mean lets face it, you can only play so much.:) I find her to be an amazing compliment to his crazy energy. She has crept into our hearts and taken up residence there. So for anyone out there contemplating your first dog and experiencing worry over which sex to go with. Don’t sweat it. Either way, you will have an amazing dog to love and learn from.
