With the impending release of the new movie “Marmaduke” I just wanted to weigh in before all the kids who see the movie start begging their parents to buy them a big Scoobby Doo dog, only later to find out it was too much dog for them and turn the dog into a rescue or worse a shelter. As the parent of two Great Danes let me first say that yes, they are the most amazing dogs. They are big, silly, sweet and noble, but here are some down sides to consider before bringing a Dane into your Family:
1. A huge food bill
2. Everything costs more. Jumbo size beds, etc.
3. Danes must get obedience training. Even Danes as sweet as they are will not get along with every dog and at 170lbs or more in some cases that’s alot of dog to have control or no control over.
4. They are not the kind of dog for you if you like to kennel your dog ouside. They like and need to be with their families, not outside in a kennel or dog house. They are very sensitive despite their size.
5. Not easy to find Friends willing to babysit large dogs such as the Dane
6. They will instinctively stand in front of the TV just as your favorite show comes on.
These are the biggies. Well maybe not point #6. Like I said. I think they are amazing dogs and I can’t imagine my life without them. You can get alot more great information and other views by checking out the forums at www.danesonline.com. If after checking them out you feel the Dane is right for your familly, I say congratulations! A great place to adopt a great dane is www.magdrl.org
